I wondered why this was a crewman of the Zeppelin LZ.1 - the very first Zeppelin constructed dated 1900. Personally I think it is (much) later. I am also not very sure that the man is wearing a harness for a parachute (then very, very rare). Although speculative this is possibly the harness which was worn by crewmen of the Zeppelin when they had to climb out on the hull to make repairs to that hull cover. I have seen some sensational pictures of these man crawling over the hull of the Graf Zeppelin repairing in full flight, at least at a few hundred meters high.
Is there anything on the back of this picture to verify what this man is wearing? His cap may be something for the unifrom specialists, it could date the period of the picture.
Cheers

Unfortunately this is one of my earlier uploads, and I agree the accompanying narrative is a little thin. I plan to revisit a lot of my early ones - when time permits.
Written in pencil on the reverse is something like "In memory of happy times aboard LZ1, Walther Dr --- (illegible) Flanders". In German of course. I wouldn't have bothered adding the link to LZ1 if there wasn't one to begin with.
The parachute would be an "attach type" ie: attached to the rings on the harness when required. I've seen examples used by the crew on L22.
The picture was one of several from an album being offered for sale, naturally enough, given the attached provenance, they all went for a tidy sum and this was the only one I managed to procure without having to re-mortgage the house.
Others in the set had this fellow and another gent in a studio setting with the parachute unfolded and draped over the furniture and floor, not dissimilar to a giant cape. Although I don't think the size of the cape maketh the man!
It was a while ago now, but I remember considering re-mortgaging. The quality of the images was exquisite.

I think the notation of the back may be an error. LZ1 was the Zeppelin prototype, I don't know if any military personel would have had many "happy times" aboard her.
He may have meant Z1 (first army airship, used for training 1908-1910) or the L1 (aka LZ 14 used by the Navy, launched in 1912 and lost at sea less than a year later))

Indread Coal Very possible I guess. Thanks for the information.
